About Event
Rock, Paper, Scissors, Shoot is a series organized by Flying House Arts Collective in the Red Giant project space, exploring the relationship between painting, photography, and sculpture. Across three one week exhibitions with panel discussions, the series pairs two artists from different media to look at the narrative tension that can emerge between them, and to reexamine the stereotypes, contrasts, and associations that have formed around each.
Vol. 1.3, Muscle Heroism?: Between Sculpture and Painting, pairs Nic F. Amsel and Julie McCleery. Painting and sculpture may seem worlds apart, yet they share a drive toward the idea of climbing to one’s feet. Painting carries its dreams onto the canvas through a sensory intuition born almost of muscle memory, while sculpture props up pillars of flesh and blood, negotiating with objects, events, and gravity itself. Can this be called a romantic, muscular form of heroism? Does the artwork become a heroic body? The two artists, both active in sculpture and painting, reflect on the narrative desires, dreams, and muscular will that pass between the two media.
Opening and panel discussion Friday, December 4, 5 to 7pm. $5 RSVP through Eventbrite. On view through December 11.
